City of Kimberley Reaches Major Underground Construction Milestone on Kimberley Avenue

The City of Kimberley is pleased to report that underground utility work on the Kimberley Avenue Corridor Improvements Project is nearing completion.

The new watermain, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer infrastructure has now been substantially installed throughout the project area, marking a significant milestone. Crews will now begin transitioning to surface construction, including road excavation, grading, compaction and road base preparation.

At the outset of the project, the City anticipated maintaining at least one lane of traffic through portions of the work zone for much of the construction period. However, once excavation began, the condition, location and alignment of underground infrastructure made it unsafe and impractical to keep traffic moving through the corridor. As a result, the area has remained closed to through traffic, with detours in place for the duration of the project.

Pedestrian access is available along the designated route near Gym 67, though temporary closures may occur as work progresses. Closures are likely later this week. It is recommended that pedestrians use alternate routes on Thursday and Friday, September 17th and 18th, 2026. 

The City is also aware that several online mapping tools are showing incorrect road closure information. We have reported the errors but have no ability to remove them from those online sources. 

The City recognizes that the closure has created inconvenience for residents, businesses and visitors and appreciates the community's patience as this important infrastructure upgrade moves into its next phase.

The Kimberley Avenue Corridor Improvements Project will replace aging underground infrastructure, improve stormwater management, and enhance the transportation corridor for residents and visitors for years to come.
